Program Services:
The Georgia Land Conservation Center promotes the conservation of open land for the benefit of present and future generations. Our services include:
- Provide funds for the permanent preservation of wetlands and streams
- Promote public policies that provide incentives for voluntary private land conservation
- Educate landowners and other key partners about land conservation options and how to use them
- Support the sustainable use and stewardship of land
- Serve as a resource to people who want to know more about land conservation
Our constituencies include both land and people. Land that provides conservation values, and people who need clean and abundant drinking water, fresh locally-grown produce, places for solace and to hunt and fish and enjoy the outdoors, and natural parks where children can play and learn to appreciate the wonders of nature.
A Brief History:
The Georgia Land Conservation Center started as the nonprofit Georgia Environmental Policy Institute in 1993 to provide legal and technical services to citizens concerned about the quality of their environment. In 1995, the Institute added several programs including the Georgia Land Trust Service Center, to support and improve the capacity of land trusts to conserve land. We also produced Right Whale News, a newsletter promoting the recovery of the right whale. Eventually, the Service Center became the dominant program, and we changed the name to the Georgia Land Trust Service Center. Experience with the Service Center made us realize that our constituency is broader than just land trusts; it includes landowners, concerned citizens, government agencies and everyone who cares about the future of open space land in Georgia. In 2009, we changed our name again to reflect this broader constituency; we are now the Georgia Land Conservation Center.
Organizational Structure:
The Georgia Land Conservation Center is governed by a small but dedicated board of directors. The board is assisted by an advisory council who bring additional talents and financial resources to the Center. The day-to-day operations of the Center are carried out by a small staff with offices in the historic Old Jail (1876) located in Athens, Georgia. The Executive Director is supported by Public Policy Advisors.
