What is a land trust?
A land trust is a nonprofit organization that actively works to conserve land by undertaking or assisting direct land transactions.
Finding a land trust partner:
There are over 40 land trusts that operate in Georgia. One of the services the Georgia Land Conservation Center provides is to link a landowner with the most appropriate land trust(s) in your area. This often is based on the kind of land – for instance, forest land, agricultural land, wetlands, habitat for wildlife – and the kinds of future uses to be allowed – for instance, timber harvesting, farming, wildlife enhancement. Accredited land trusts:
The Land Trust Accreditation Commission accredits land trusts who meet or exceed a number of specific standards. Formal accreditation is a mark of distinction in land conservation, recognizing organizations for meeting national standards of excellence, upholding the pubic trust and ensuring that conservation efforts are permanent. As of August 2009, there are six accredited land trusts operating in Georgia: the Athens Land Trust (www.athenslandtrust.org), the Central Savannah River Land Trust (www.csrlt.org), the Mountain Conservation Trust of Georgia (www.mctga.org), the Natural Lands Trust (www.natlands.org), the Oconee River Land Trust (www.orlt.com) and the Tall Timbers Research Station and Land Conservancy (www.talltimbers.org).
